Best Buy starts selling refurb iPhones 3g

$50 just isn’t enough of a discount for a reduced warranty.

I wonder if they would let me stand at the counter and enter ALL the serial numbers to get the one with the most remaining warranty???

Signal keeps bouncing back and forth between 3G and EDGE

This is crazy. My signal keeps changing. On E I have all 5 bars of strength and on 3G it fluctuates between 1 to 4 bars.

Speeds

The EDGE test was completed with the 3G signal off.

Like this test… started in 3G for the download and switched to EDGE for the upload test.

iPhones on Lipstick Jungle

One of my favorite shows is slated to be discontinued, Lipstick Jungle.

I was watching yesterday’s episode and both Nico and Victory had 16GB white iPhone 3Gs while real estate mogul Joe Bennett was still carrying around an orignal iPhone (I could tell because the back was chrome).

Why is the billionaire (or millionaire who knows) still walking around with the old one?

Also, the way Nico tossed her phone on her desk haphazardly made my heart drop.

And NO ONE was using a case.  How many of you carry your iPhone with no case?

Improvements on the iPhone 3G

Well, I am still trying out the new phone.  One item I have really noticed over the original is that the speaker on this one is MUCH better.

I know there are several forums where some have seen improvement and others think it is a figment of the imagination, but I can say without a doubt (having owned 7 original iPhones in all) that this one plays much louder!

Any other improvements I should be aware of?

Whatever I have done to offend the Apple Gods… I repent [now on my 2nd iPhone 3G]

Dear Steve Jobs [or other Apple god-like figures]

I realize that when I sit in meetings and make fun of the people with Macs, I might have offended thee.

I realize that when I stated over and over again that I was not a Mac fan-girl, I might have offended thee.

I realize when the iPhone first came out and I didn’t immediately plunk down the $600 to get one and I laughed at the people in line sleeping outside AT&T waiting for one, I might have offended thee.

I thought I would have made up for it by buying myself an iPhone, then a 2nd and now an iPhone 3G.

I thought that by publicly stating if you made either a tablet or a device < 10″ I would be FIRST in line to buy it really regardless of the cost, I would have repented for my previous Apple sins.

I thought that by stating the iPhone is the best device I have ever purchased, even compared to my UMPCs, this might have negated some of the past statement I made about MACs that were less than flattering.

I have been cursed with bad iPhones.  I bought two and had 5 different replacements.  I did not abuse them, but I kept getting ones that were faulty.

I JUST bought my new iPhone 3G last night, and tonight the screen failed.  I hit the Home button, nothing.  I thought it was dead so I plugged it in.  Instead of the charge symbol or the greeting screen, I got a brilliantly WHITE screen…… and then nothing.

I plugged it into the computer, I got the prompt to import pictures followed shortly by an automatic sync in iTunes.

I immediately called AT&T to ask my local store if anyone had reported such an issue and since I bought it yesterday did I need to take it to Apple or could they handle it.  They told me to bring it in.  This was news to my ears since AT&T is 3 miles from home while Apple is 20 miles and it was unlikely I could beg my way into a Genius appointment at 8pm at night.

It was painless.  They asked it I had done a hard reset, I said yes still no screen.  The AT&T rep looked over the phone, pressing some buttons (and looking for physical damage I suspect) and then he said they would just swap it for a new one.

I really like to report on good customer service as well as bad, and from this store I have gotten NOTHING but good CS since my move.

Now I am doing another upgrade of the software, another restore of my backup from the failed new iPhone3G, and then I will need to do ANOTHER sync.  Likely another 4 hours of prep to make my phone perfect [oh wait, just got the notification from iTunes it was done after only 20 minutes of restoring the backup, YIPPEE!!!]

So, I write this post to ask the Apple-gods for mercy.  I promise to sing your gospel.  I promise to refrain from speaking ill of your products and making myself a MAC user within a year.  I promise to treat my iPhone3G part 2 like it was a body part or my child.

PLEASE reverse your curse and allow me to enjoy this iPhone error-free  until a new model is released.

Okay, now I am off to reset EVERY password I have since I had to turn over the phone to AT&T and without seeing the screen I couldn’t do a wipe of the data.

While I hate them, I went to Best Buy to pick up some new iPhone 3G accessories

I hate bad customer service and there was one instance which severed my customer relationship with BestBuy more than 3 years ago. My kid sisters (14 and 9 at the time) decided to get my husband South Park for his birthday. They paid cash for the gift.

He seemed really excited and told them thank you, but then whispered to me that he already had this season. They had laid the receipt down on the table, but it accidentally got thrown away or one of the dogs ate it (yes, my dogs really eat paper and if a student tells me their dog ate their HW I am more inclined to believe it than others).

Husband tried to exchange for the correct season, denied. I went back a few days later explained my kid sisters had bought it with cash, I didn’t want a refund just an exchange for the correct season (same price, item was still wrapped, and yellow Best Buy sticker was on the item) again, denied. They told me if I could produce the credit card used then they could look it up for me. ARE YOU A MORON??? I said my 13 year old sister paid CASH.

Fine, I said I had purchased something at the next register (6 and they were on 7) at the same time. If they looked up my purchase could they then look at register 7 at the same time for the transaction for South Park.

Again, denied.

After that Circuit City got ALL my business, that Christmas alone worth $3000. My husband still occasionally buys items and if I see them, I take them back. I will not reward a company with such a restrictive exchange policy with my business. It would be one thing if it was opened, another if it did NOT have a Best Buy sticker attached, another if I was demanding a refund, another if I wasn’t exchanging it for the EXACT same series, just the next seaon. I offered a way to look up the transaction, it would have taken a little bit of work but previously working in WalMart cash office gave me some insight on how store systems work and it COULD have been done with minimal work.

Okay, now that I have explained my refusal to purchase items from BB.

Today I went because Apple is 20 miles away, AT&T didn’t sell the case I wanted, and I figured wasting the gas to drive was a worse offense that just biting the bullet and walking into the store.

I did my research before I went. I really wanted another Agent 18 case since the one on my original iPhone served me well, but there are such BAD reviews about it on apple.com I looked for an alternative.

What I found was the Incase slider case for the iPhone 3G.

White was the only color they had and although I did decide on the white iPhone 3G, the white case just looks strange with the black trim on the front of the phone. I would have preferred black, but getting my iPhone protected is more important than the color choice IMO.

Since the iPhone 3G is a different size than the original, my screen protectors are not a perfect fit any longer. I picked up 5 anti-glare by DLO for $11.99 (on sale from $18.99). It went on the phone just like the ones I typically purchase from Apple, and for a LOT less money.

Finally, the Griffin dual charger (I have an iPhone 3G and a 60GB Video iPod, while hubby has a 30GB Video iPod) so I figured the extra charger couldn’t hurt. It was $49.99 but the reviews are good aside from complaints of no dock connector for the iPhone 3G which didn’t bother me since I would prefer to dock her in the case.

While I find it irritating that the new iPhone 3G didn’t come with a dock, the adapter can’t be closed, and the iPhone doesn’t fit in the old iPhone dock, I have two sVideo docks, a univeral dock, and now this Griffin charger which should suit me fine.

Any accessory favorites you have for the iPhone 3G?

UPDATE: while MANY complain of the lack of a iPhone 3G dock connector, mine had one, #15.

My favorite apps for the iPhone from the App Store

I always see these lists online about the “best apps of 2008” blah, blah, blah

So, these are mostly free and not on everyone’s list, but here are mine

  1. Facebook- I use this one morning, noon, and night [I realize I am WAY past due for a Facebook holiday!]
  2. eBay- whether I am selling something, pricing something, or buying something this app is VERY helpful
  3. WordPress- ever since I started this blog it has been VERY useful
  4. i.TV- even before they integrated Netflix, this was a GREAT app.  As I sit in front of the TV I prefer using the i.TV app to the guide from Comcast.
  5. NYTimes- I LOVE reading this everyday, but although I keep 5 days of news stored I can’t seem to click on a previous day to read that news if I missed it previously.
  6. Around me- others like UrbanSpoon but that one doesn’t have information for my area!  I am trying out Yelp! and Local Picks, but Around Me includes more than food, which is great.
  7. Banking apps- 2 of my 3 banks offer one.  These are REALLY useful when you want to check your balance or transfer money between accounts.
  8. Deliveries- I am TOTALLY OCD when it comes to stalking packages I am waiting for.  This app (was $0.99 when I bought it) totally allows me to check ALL packages at once if I am expecting them from different carriers.  It allows you to track packages by Amazon account which brings me to…
  9. Amazon- while it does little more than the mobile website it saves my information so that I don’t have to continue to enter it.
  10. White Pages- This one has REAL potential, if only I didn’t have to memorize the number that called me in order to use Reverse Lookup.  A button from the recent calls would be nice 🙂

As you can see, most of my favorites are free.  I am considering another Blogging tool that is $5 and perhaps a syncing tool (paid as well).

I just got Fring (a chatting IM app among other things) and promptly deleted the others I had on my phone.  While I would prefer a native app that could work in the background and send alerts when someone logs in and sends a message, Fring will work in the meantime between times.

If you have any that are great, add them to the comments!

At least one thing is improved by 1000%

Okay, I started this iPhone 3G from scratch.

  1. did not use a backup from my iPhone 2G to restore this phone
  2. synced my old iPhone contacts with Google contacts and then synced the same account with my new iPhone 3G
  3. added all video, music, applications, and photos through a sync with iTunes
  4. manually added all email accounts
  5. recreated the bookmarks I had on my home pages
  6. deleted the apps that were synced to the iPhone that I don’t use
  7. found some interesting new ones like Yelp! and fring
  8. manually recreated photo IDs for my contacts (Google doesn’t store them)

Now when I sync this phone to the same computer I used for the old one that took 7.5 hours to backup and then 8.5 hours to restore, the backup takes seconds.

So, whatever it was that was causing the HUGE delay in restore/backup on my old phone is NOT happening with the new one!

Yeah!

Getting there

Okay, took a little over 3 hours but I now have a fully loaded 3G phone.

A couple of notes
1. My phone had 2.1 and not 2.2 loaded.
2. It wouldn’t load one of my apps until I updated.
3. I loaded all 13 of my active email accounts, but can’t remember one of my passwords.
4. The screen is yellower than the original and I don’t like it.
5. Inside my house before I added the wifi password, the phone defaulted to EDGE. I want my 3G!!!!!!!

Otherwise, so far so good!

Less than 24 hours later… looky what I got!

Sold my iPhone 2g for $350 and promptly ran to my local at&t store 15 min before they closed and replaced her with this!

Decided on white and double the capacity of my old one for a bonus!

I am syncing my old stuff instead of applying a backup, because we all know how that turned out before.

The sync is almost done then I will just need to type in passwords for my mail accounts.

My old iPhone will be wiped off tonight and promptly mailed off to it’s new owner tomorrow!
